Things to do after Installing Elementary OS

Elementary OS is another cool Linux distro that based on Ubuntu, Elementary OS focus on it’s user experience and visual design with it’s very minimalist user environment and resemble like mac . Elementary OS have it’s own Desktop Environment called pantheon.

After Installing Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, we are going to give your elementary OS to load the best experience by installing some tweaks and some essential applications.

1. Update your elementary OS

Open your terminal and type the following commands then hit enter.

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

or you can do this one by one.

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

2. Install Package management tool (aptitude, gdebi, synaptic)

These are package management tool that work faster than software center.

$ sudo apt-get install aptitude gdebi-core synaptic

3. Install multimedia codecs

To play some multimedia formats (usually mp3) you must install extra codecs for decoding multimedia file format.

$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

4. Install VLC Media Player

This player is the best video player for any kind of video file formats, you can do a lot of things with VLC, such as streaming. You can play audio files with VLC, to install VLC simply just enter the following command :

$ sudo apt-get install vlc

5. Install archive file formats

To add support for creating and extracting archive file formats.

$ sudo apt-get install rar unrar p7zip-rar p7zip unace cabextract lzip lunzip sharutils uudeview arj lha mpack

6. Install Uget Download Manager

Simply we can call this as Internet Download Manager for linux, install this by type the following command.

$ sudo apt-get install uget

7. Install more browsers

Elementary OS comes with Midori Browser as default browser but Midori has lesser features than Chrome and Firefox, because this browser is a lightweight browser.

If you want to install other browsers just follow this commands :

Chrome 64 bit

$ wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
$ sudo gdebi google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

Chrome 32 bit

$ wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb
$ sudo gdebi google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb

Firefox

$ sudo apt-get install firefox

8. Install Flash plugin

This following command will install Flash player plugin.

$ sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

9. Install Elementary Tweaks and goodies to Customize desktop

Elementary OS repository provides some package that allows you to customize your desktop. This package comes from different PPA, so you must add the PPA to your repository, then update it.

$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:versable/elementary-update -y
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install elementary-tweaks

for wallpapers, themes, and icons

$ sudo apt-get install elementary-wallpaper-collection elementary-.*-theme elementary-.*-icons

After installation, you can customize your elementary from System Settings > Tweaks. Happy Customizing !

10. Install Office Suite – Libre Office, Open Office

Elementary didn’t comes with office suite for maintain the file size, so let’s install !

Libre Office

$ sudo apt-get install libreoffice

Open Office

$ sudo apt-get install openoffice.org

11. Install GIMP (GNU Image Manipulator Program)

If you want to install image editor like Photoshop, you can install GIMP as the alternatives.

$ sudo apt-get install gimp
