Install Wine1.7 on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Elementary OS from PPA

Install Wine1.7 on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Elementary OS from PPAWine is a free compatibility layer software for running Windows Applications on Linux, OSX, and BSD, Wine is an Open Source Software. Wine has some Third-party applications to make Wine more useful and easier to use like winetricks, PlayOnLinux, CrossOver. Latest version of Wine is 1.7.29 this is a development version and for stable version is 1.6.2.

In this tutorial I will show you how to Install Wine1.7 on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Elementary OS from PPA, This tutorial is for 32-bit or 64-bit OS.

Installing Wine1.7

Step 1

Open your terminal window by pressing CTRL + ALT + T or open it from your Applications Menu.

Step 2

Add wine PPA by typing this command in your terminal :

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa 

Step 3

Update your repository :

$ sudo apt-get update

wait till update progress is completed.

Step 4

After update, just install your wine by this command :

$ sudo apt-get install wine1.7

After Installation open your windows application using wine, in this example is notepad.

$ wine notepad.

Uninstall Wine1.7

To remove your wine completely, just run the following commands :

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge wine1.7
$ sudo apt-get autoremove
